Quick Start Guide

This quick start guide walks you through generating your first batch of dummy data in Dataverse. By the end, you'll have realistic test records in your environment.

⏱ Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes (plus data generation time based on record count)

Before You Begin

Ensure you have:

✓ DvSchemaSync installed and registered

✓ A Dataverse connection already configured (via Manage Connections)

✓ A non-production Dataverse environment for testing

⚠ Important: Generated records cannot be automatically removed. Always test in a sandbox or development environment first.

Step 1: Launch the Dummy Data Generator

  1. Open DvSchemaSync.
  2. On the landing page, find the Generate Dummy Data section.
  3. Click Generate →.

Step 2: Select Your Dataverse Connection

  1. In the Connection Settings section, click the Dataverse Connection dropdown.
  2. If no connections are available, Refresh the connection list first and then try again in the drop down list.
  3. Select your target Dataverse environment.
  4. (Optional) Click Load Users and select a Record Owner if you want records assigned to a specific user.

💡 No connections? Return to the landing page and click Manage → to add a Dataverse connection first. See Section 5, Page 1: Connection Management for details.

Step 3: Configure Data Settings

  1. Data Prefix (optional): Enter a prefix like "Demo" to easily identify generated records, by applying a prefix allows you to easily locate and manually delete these records at a later date. For life like data, leave this blank.
  2. Country/Region: Select your preferred locale (United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, or France).
  3. Date Range: Adjust the From/To dates that drive the created on values of created records, this helps create more authentic data over several months/years..
  4. Leave Bypass custom plugins and workflows checked (recommended for faster generation).

Step 4: Select Entities and Record Counts

In the Select Entities and Record Counts section, check the entities you want and enter the number of records:

For a quick test, try:

☑ Accounts: 10

☑ Contacts: 25

☑ Leads: 15

The Total Records to Generate counter will update as you make selections.

Step 5: Generate the Data

  1. Click Generate Data.
  2. Review the confirmation dialog showing your selections.
  3. Click Yes to start generating records.
  4. Watch the progress page as records are created.

Step 6: Verify Your Data

  1. When complete, click Finish to return to the landing page.
  2. Open your Dataverse environment (e.g., Power Apps or Dynamics 365).
  3. Navigate to Accounts, Contacts, or Leads.
  4. Verify your new records appear with the prefix you specified (if applicable).

✓ Success! You've generated your first batch of dummy data. Try experimenting with different countries, larger record counts, or additional entities like Opportunities and Cases.
